A dip in the INKWELL
February 10, 2005
I guess I've been a little negligent lately. Actually I've plumb ignored this diary for a while. I am too busy most of the time. And then when I spend a good chunk of the afternoon surfing other people's diaries, I open up the "add new entry" window and sit here trying to write something all pithy and clever.
I guess I'm just not pithy and clever. But I do have my own office now. So I have to take advantage of it and do some kind of non-work related computer stuff. What's the point of having a door I can shut (and lock) if I'm going to sit here and do actual work all day.
When I first started at this office, I figured the few people who did leave their doors open all day were good little doobies who did nothing but work on the clock.
Then, one day, I was walking by my friend's office when she said, "Kev, come check this out." I, of course, assumed it was an annoying email from our boss, or some announcement of a campus-wide event we should ironically get all interested in.
She was shopping for dishes. On line. She wanted my opinion about the colors. Boy was that an epiphany.
In the last week, my entire department got new computers. They were delivered around 11:00 in the morning, and I had mine up and running, with all my peripherals, software and other goodies reloaded by 2:30. This includes a good 12-1 lunch hour.
My boss poked his head in. "Oh, you have your computer installed!?" This was said in the same tone one might say, "Oh, you bought everyone lunch!?" I could see the "Jackpot!" in his eyes. "Maybe you can help the others with theirs. Then we won't have to wait for IT, who won't come out to do it anyway."
Installing the entire department's computers was an eye-opening experience. I had to set up a network shared drive for one guy's files. He had 785 megabytes of stuff. I had 185 when I did my computer. "What the Hell is all this stuff?" I thought. I looked at the folders, and noticed that 650 of the 784MB was in one folder. Labelled "Music."
I spent three hours busting my berries so this guy could carry his RealPlayer playlist on to his new computer. And I feel guilty when I play a game of Minesweeper.
Ooop. Four-thirty. I'm off the clock; time to do my homework!
